7 Tips For Optimizing Your Online Store

Getting your online store in tip top shape is super important for not only getting customers onto your store but to get them from browsing to actually making a purchase. A cluttered site or hard to find items are a sure fire way to have potential customers frustrated and clicking the x on the browser tab.

We've put together some easy tips to help your store appeal to customers, be easy to use and most importantly turn potential customers into packages in the mail.

Tip 1— Clean Up Your Products

When coming to your store your customers want to see what's new and available. Remove old, sold-out products that will not be restocked and freshen up the page by moving items around. Make sure your homepage displays your newest or most popular items and keep switching it up to inspire customers to keep coming back to check out your latest stock.

Tip 2—Freshen Up Your Photos

Your photos are the most important thing on your website to communicate with your customers the value and specialness of your products. Update your images to reflect the new, fresh season. This will inspire your customers and stir up excitement for the new season of shopping and your items.

Tip 3—Read Your Descriptions

After photos, your product descriptions are the most important way you have to communicate what your products are like. Remember, your customer can't physically pick up an item and try it on. You have to re-create that experience with your words. Paint a picture of what the product is like, how you could style it, where you could wear it, how it fits and what it will leave them feeling like. Make sure to include material information and sizing guides (if they apply) so people know exactly what they are receiving from you.


Tip 4—Check Your Links

You want your customers to easily find what they are looking for on your site without having to think about it or search around. Make sure that your site navigation is clear and all of your links work (and go to where you think they do).

Tip 5—Make Sure It's Responsive

When is the last time you looked at your store on a tablet? Do you know what it looks like on an Android phone and an iPhone? Or what about your Grandma’s ancient PC. Just because your site looks shiny and perfect on your laptop doesn’t mean it is scaling down the way you think it is. Check it out on as many devices as you can to make sure it looks the way you designed it to look!

Tip 6—Make Email Sign Up Forms Obvious and Often

Email marketing messages have the highest conversion rate when compared to social, direct mail and more. Make sure your email sign up forms are easy to use and appear often on your website. Don’t just bury them in a footer and hope people will find them. Dig them out and make them the shining star of your pages. (Also, consider throwing in an incentive to sign up like a percentage off or a freebie instead of the usual 'be the first to know' call to action!)

Tip 7— Pretend to be a Customer

Take some time to pretend you are a customer, place a few items in your cart and follow their path all the way to hitting that checkout button. Does your cart work the way you think it does? Is it customized so it feels like they are still on your site or does it feel straight out of the box template? Are your return policies easy to understand (and find)? Is shipping calculating how you think it is? Make the process as easy and on brand as you can to inspire buyer confidence and get people actually clicking checkout instead of leaving the items in their cart.

Making time to check in on your store and keeping it fresh will not only make your customer experience better it will help you rank better in Google search and keep your customers coming back often to check out what's new.
